Why Cabs Are The Most Convenient Form Of Toronto Transportation
Posted on: 25 March 2015
Toronto is a very busy city, so it may not be the best idea to travel by car and you may be better off taking a taxi, especially given that Toronto's parking is even worse than most other large cities. While you could take advantage of the subway lines, sometimes you're in a hurry or you have a lot of luggage in tow.
Finding a Taxi
Fortunately, taxis are not difficult to find because several companies operate taxis in Toronto. While taxis are typically more expensive than other forms of transportation, since they are more convenient, they can make your trip much more enjoyable. Stand on a corner and simply wave when you see a taxi with its green light on. Commercial areas have the most taxis, especially near hotels. If you are in a residential or industrial area, you will more likely need to call for a cab.
Paying for the Taxi
The taxi system operates by a system of set fees and rights that are set by the city. These rates cannot be negotiated. However, if you are happy with the service, you can choose to provide a tip, with a 10% tip being acceptable.
Getting Advice On Where to Go
The taxi drivers are required to take the most direct route possible to your destination, unless you ask the driver to take a different route. Also, in Toronto, while the cab drivers might be able to recommend a hotel or restaurant, they cannot do so without you asking first.
Traveling in Large Groups
If you are traveling with a lot of passengers, you might want to consider reserving a taxi ahead of time instead of finding a taxi randomly because most taxis can only fit about three or four passengers.
Other Options
Before you consider taking a subway, keep in mind that there are several areas that a subway car will not travel to. Therefore, you may need to use a combination of the subway car and another form of transportation to get to your final destination. Buses are more convenient because they travel to more places and you can hop off of a bus wherever you want at night. However, the bus does not travel directly to your destination, while a taxi will drop you off right by the door, minimizing the walking distance. This is great when it's freezing cold out, you have a lot to carry or you are simply too exhausted to walk far.
